Santa Ana winds winds could topple trees in L.A. this week

The storms are finally over, but another change in the weather could bring a new set of problems to Southern California.

Northeast Santa Ana winds are expected to bring gusts between 50 and 70 miles per hour Wednesday and Thursday to parts of Los Angeles County, including the Santa Clarita Valley, the western San Fernando Valley, and the Santa Monica Mountains.

That could mean a higher risk of trees being blown down, according to meteorologist Rich Thompson with the National Weather Service.

“The soil is so wet from all the rain we've had so far this winter that it probably won't take as much as it usually does to knock, say, a eucalyptus tree over,” he told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.

Thompson says that sustained wind velocities of even 25 to 35 miles an hour can weaken trees that don’t have deep roots, which are more susceptible to wet soil and strong winds. Public works and utility crews could be busy from late Wednesday night until Friday morning dealing with downed trees and power lines.
