The sky-high cost of eggs isn’t expected to get better any time soon, with the USDA predicting prices will keep climbing throughout the year. But don’t give up on your morning omelet quite yet – you can always cut out the middle-man and rent your own chicken.
“Two hens lay about a dozen eggs a week,” Jen Tompkins, co-founder of Rent the Chicken, told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “They're getting their eggs right from their own backyard.”
Rent the Chicken will bring a portable chicken coop – complete with two to four egg-laying hens right to your backyard. The all-inclusive service covers delivery, pick-up, and training.
“We have either an in-person tutorial or a video tutorial,” Tompkins said. "We make sure they know how to feed the chickens. We make sure they know how to give the chickens water, where to collect the eggs from, how to say hello to the chickens, pleasantries.”

The service costs about $600 for five to six months. That averages out to between $12.50 and $30 per dozen eggs – which, for the record, is still higher than the $9 you can currently expect to pay in a California grocery store.
