The district attorneys in several Southern California counties are calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to expand his emergency declaration against price gouging in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton Fires.

The governor’s emergency declaration caps rent increases at 10% in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, but it doesn’t apply to surrounding areas. The DAs in neighboring counties say thousands of displaced fire victims are moving into their jurisdiction, where they could be vulnerable to exploitation by profit-hungry landlords.

“Extending the declaration of the emergency to our counties would allow us to aggressively prosecute those who seek to profit from victims who have lost everything in these unprecedented fires,” the letter reads.

The letter was signed by Orange County DA Todd Spitzer, Riverside DA Mike Hestrin, San Bernrdino DA Jason Anderson, and Santa Barbara DA John Savrnoch.

In a statement to Southern California News Group, a spokesperson for Newsom’s office said, "We'll let you know when we have something to share."
