A stolen vehicle suspect who led law enforcement on a chase from Sylmar to the northern reaches of Los Angeles County died Wednesday when she lost control of the SUV on a transition road, causing it to roll over and slam into a concrete overpass support column.

The Los Angeles Police Department initiated the chase near the Foothill (210) Freeway around 2 p.m. after discovering the Honda SUV was stolen, authorities said. The driver headed north on the Golden State (5) Freeway, eventually transitioning to the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway then driving through the Santa Clarita area on Newhall Avenue before returning to the northbound 5 Freeway.

The suspect drove at speeds topping 110 mph at points during the chase, weaving wildly around over vehicles on the freeway, and occasionally driving in the center divider or on the shoulder of the roadway to avoid traffic.

The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit as the suspect continued into the Grapevine section of the 5 Freeway, then exited and headed back south on the highway.

As she continued south at high speed, the suspect moved onto the transition road to the 138 Freeway, but lost control of the SUV as she appeared to swerve away from something on the roadway. The SUV veered onto the dirt shoulder and overturn, slamming at high speed into the concrete overpass column.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Her name was not immediately released.
