This Earth Day, hundreds of volunteers headed to the beach in Santa Monica to pick up trash.

KNX’s Nataly Tavidian caught up with a group of them – students who are doing something interesting with trash.

“High school students in Santa Monica will audit the trash – hundreds of pounds of it,” she explained. Through this audit, they aim to catalog what companies the trash comes from.

Tavidian said the students found a lot of cigarette butts and plastics hiding in the sand, per Stephanie Gebhardt Rath, Beach Programs Manager for the group Heal the Bay. With this information, the group plans to push for policy change.

“that info helps us go to companies to make changes,” she said, adding that “It will help us make policy that would target certain types of trash.”
