Super Tuesday has arrived in Southern California and the two biggest races in Los Angeles are the race for the U.S. Senate and the race for District Attorney.

In the Senate race, Representatives Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, Barbara, and Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey are among the top candidates.  Sarah Sadhwani, a political science professor at Pomona College, told KNX News’ Join Baird she thinks Schiff and Garvey will face off in November.

“If Garvey is the number two spot or even the number one spot as he was polling this weekend, that's a shoo-in for Adam Schiff come November because it is highly unlikely that a Republican could ever win the seat in a general election,” she said.

In the race for District Attorney, current D.A. George Gascón will face 11 challengers. The other candidates include Jeff Chemerinsky, Nathan Hochman, David S. Milton, Jonathan Hatami, Lloyd "Bobcat" Masson, John McKinney, Maria Ramirez, Eric Siddall, and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judges Debra Archuleta and Craig J. Mitchell.

“The last poll that I saw come out had support for Gascón at a 15% point rate which is incredibly low,” Sadhwani said. “That being said all of the other candidates are splitting that support.”

Voters can also expect a couple of ballot initiatives. One of those initiatives is Measure HLA, which would make some alterations to the city’s Mobility Plan 2035.  It also aims to implement a myriad of street modifications to improve safety in the roadways.

United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, International Association of Fire Fighters, California Professional Firefighters, and Keep LA Moving voiced their opposition to the ballot initiative, saying it could have a negative impact on emergency responses.

Proposition 1 is also on the ballot. Governor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass are backing the measure, which aims to deal with the homeless crisis by allowing the state to borrow billions of dollars for more housing and treatment beds.

Californians Against Proposition 1, however, claim that Proposition 1 would cut current mental health services that are already working.
