'This is just ridiculous': Sylmar residents say city-owned trees are a fire hazard

Residents in a Sylmar neighborhood say trees belonging to the city of Los Angeles are creating a fire hazard.

Karen Slider, a retired firefighter, and her husband Michael told KNX News’ Karen Adams that she and the other residents on Joseph Court receive brush clearance notices every year because they live in a high fire zone, but the notices say the only hazards around their homes are the city-owned pine trees that line the street.

“They're not coming out here and inspecting to see if we have any brush, because if they did, they [would] see that the brush belongs to them,” Karen said.

The couple said the city crews are not maintaining the trees and that some of their neighbors tried to trim them but received fines for their efforts.

“This is just ridiculous that they got all these trees here and they don’t take care of them, Michael said. “They know that they're fire hazards because they told us on their own document that these trees are fire hazards, and they're not going to take care of them. So they need to cut them down. I've been here almost 30 years. They've never taken care of them.”
