The Original Saugus Café, which opened in 1886 and closed earlier this month, is back open under new management and a new name.
The newly named Saugus Restaurant opened on Sunday. On Monday, KNX News’ Emily Valdez spoke with customers about the new changes. Robin, one of the diners, said the place looks very different.
“All the memorabilia and stuff is off the walls, so that's kind of sad if they're not going to put it back up,” she said. “But the food was just as delicious, and the service was wonderful. They're very nice people.”
But Dave, another customer, said he was happy to see it reopen.
“We came here…like a week before they closed…I didn't even know they were closing,” he said. “ I saw on the news that they were closing and then just like that, they were gone. And apparently they had this whole plan to reopen, but nobody knew.
Simon Aguilar is the new general manager. He said he’s happy to have had customers come in and support the business.
“Some people say that they won't come because we take over the place, but we didn't want to take over the place,” he said. “The landlord just say, ‘You know what, do you wanna run it after the other previous owner, let it go?”
There is a dispute between the previous owners nd the landlord; however, Aguilar told Valdez that they are a third party and have nothing to do with that, but they did have to rename some of the food items because of the ongoing legal battle between the other two parties.
