According to a press release, 65-year-old Richard Boerger, killed by a driver while on a stroll with his sweetheart of eight years, Carmen Gonzalez, this Valentine’s Day. The driver was allegedly speeding down the residential road in Covina, Calif., which does not have a sidewalk.
Gonzalez said that her fight for justice following the death of the love of her life has been unexpected.
“We’re being the ones challenged to defend ourselves,” she said. “I don’t understand how we’re becoming victims of… victimization of the legal system.”
Near the place where Boerger saved Gonzalez’s life, a Ghost Tire Memorial has gone up. These memorials are found in various locations to memorialize people killed by speeding drivers and are organized by the group Streets are Safe for Everyone.
“The last act that he could do was… to save the life of his love while he got hit,” said Damian Kevitt, director of the group.
In 2023, LA County had nearly 800 fatalities. The number one factor in these tragedies was speeding.
