There’s a new warning about thieves who are distracting people to steal their money.

KNX News’ Karen Adams reported there have been multiple victims in Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties. Orange County Sheriff’s Sergeant Gerard McCann said the department recently arrested three Romanian nationals who targeted a man at an ATM.

“One person distracted the victim by dropping some money, getting the victim's attention, saying, ‘Looks like you dropped something.’ And another suspect who was using the ATM nearby had already looked and seen the victim's PIN number,” he said.

McCann said the thief was also able to swap out the man’s debit card, leaving him with a fake one. Two of the suspected thieves are already out on bail.

McCann said these types of thefts aren’t only happening at ATMs, but also at stores and in parking lots.
