In Torrance, thousands of people started their Thanksgiving morning by competing in the annual Harry Sutter Memorial Turkey Trot Fun Run.
Torrance mayor George Chen told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian that 4,000 runners participated in the 5k.
“This is one of the biggest events of the year, other than our Armed Forces Day Parade,” he said. “Everybody in South Bay comes and it's just so fun. There's a few elite runners in the front, but most of us are just goofing around having a great time.”
Some of the runners even dressed up for the occasion, including one who competed as a turkey.
“It has arm flaps that come up with a cornucopia of colors and a hat that has a turkey beak on it,” the man said. “A gobble that I had to tie up because it's going to get in my way for the race.”

This is the 44th year that the city has held the race. Forrest Hunt with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department started the first turkey trot.
“My boss at the Recreation Department actually had the idea of a turkey trot,” he said. “Thirty-nine years old, before anything developed with the turkey trot, he passed away next year. I went to race director school and here we are 45 years later with the Harry Sutter Memorial Fun Run.”
There was no competition and no keeping score. Those who missed it this year can try again next year, rain or shine.
