LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A trial date was set Thursday in the corruption case against Los Angeles City Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas and a former dean of the University of Southern California’s School of Social Work.

A federal judge ruled that the trial of Ridley-Thomas, 67, and Marilyn Flynn, 83, will begin Aug. 9, 2022 in Downtown L.A.

The defendants have been charged in a 20-count indictment alleging Ridley-Thomas, then a member of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, agreed to direct money to USC in return for admission for his son, Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, into a graduate program with a full scholarship and paid professorship.

Flynn also allegedly arranged to direct a $100,000 donation from Ridley-Thomas’ campaign funds through the university to a non-profit operated by his son, a former member of the California State Assembly.

In exchange, Ridley-Thomas allegedly pushed millions of dollars worth of county contracts to the School of Social Work.

Both defendants have denied any wrongdoing.

Ridley-Thomas has been suspended from the City Council, his salary frozen, while the case is pending. He has thus far declined to resign.
