The University of California system has set a record for incoming freshman students who hail from the Golden State.

Of the nearly 130,000 freshmen starting classes in the fall of 2023, 88,285 are from California – a 3.5% increase from the previous year, and a record high for the university system.

This year’s state budget included a 5% funding boost for UC, with the aim of helping the schools enroll more in-state students.

The incoming first-year class also has a record number of Latino, Black, American Indian, and Pacific Islander students, according to The Mercury News. The Los Angeles Times reports that 44% of the class are from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and 45% of in-state freshmen are first-generation college students.
