A US Navy reconnaissance jet ended up in the water on Monday after it overshot its runway on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, military officials shared.
The plane had nine members aboard when it crashed into the water, and Marine Corps spokesperson 1st Lt. Hailey Harms said that they all survived the incident, USNI News reported.
The plane, a P-8A Poseidon aircraft, is a twin-engine multi-mission patrol and reconnaissance jet with the airframe of a Boeing 737, could be seen in photos sitting on top of the water in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii News Now reported.
The incident occurred at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii on the main island of Oahu, located just north of the capital of Honolulu.
At the time of the incident, visibility was down to around a mile, and wind gusts had reached upwards of 21 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
The US Navy’s Third Fleet shared a statement on the incident, noting that the jet, based in Whidbey Island, Washington, was “on a detachment in support of maritime homeland defense.”
The planes are known to service several different operations for the Navy, including carrying missiles, conducting antisubmarine warfare, and intelligence-gathering missions.
Harms shared that the conditions of the passengers are being assessed at this time.
“An investigation will be initiated. More details will be released as they become available,” the 3rd Fleet said in a statement.
