Around 1,800 nurses walked off the job this morning from the USC Keck Hospital and Norris Cancer Center. They’re on strike for a week over a new contract.

KNX News’ Jon Baird reported one of the biggest issues at hand is healthcare.

“We previously had a no premium option that has been taken away as a bargaining tactic. And we think that is reprehensible. And so we're out here to fight that,” one woman said.

They also want better wages.

“We're paying for healthcare now and they're not giving us a fair raise, but at the same time they're trying to cut everything. It's just not fair,” one person said.

USC Keck officials said they’re disappointed with the strike. They thought they had made progress with a federal mediator.

USC Keck officials said the hospital, the cancer center, and the clinics will remain fully staffed and open during the strike.
