LOS ANGELES (KNX) – A lawsuit was filed against the University of Southern California following accusations that it used misleading rankings from the U.S. News & World Report to advertise courses for the school’s online education graduate programs, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The lawsuit was filed by the National Student Legal Defense Network.
In addition to USC, the lawsuit was also filed against 2U Inc., which runs the online graduate program.
The suit claims the school’s Rossier School of Education took the rankings for their in-person program and used it for the online programs and that even if the rankings applied to the online courses, it wouldn’t have been factual.
“USC intentionally falsified data to inflate their U.S. News ranking, and 2U used the false numbers to pad their profits,” Eric Rothschild, litigation director of the National Student Legal Defense, told the newspaper.
The suit also alleges the school and 2U Inc. promoted rankings on their website, as well on social media.
Neither the school nor 2U Inc. have released statements regarding the lawsuit at this time.
