LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Karen Bass has been Los Angeles' mayor for 40 days, and this week she received a noteworthy endorsement from the Los Angeles council members. City lawmakers voted 13-0 to fund her Inside Safe program with $50 million in first phase pilot money.

Mayor Karen Bass asked for the money to be transferred to a special account where her administration will be able to spend it without advance oversight.

"This was waived through committee without hearings," says professor Sara Sadwhani, at Pomona College.  "It's interesting to see the council rubber stamp a blank check for the executive branch."

On Wednesday the mayor's representatives told the council that the standard process of financial appropriation from the council itself would be too time consuming. "There's a need for funds to be immediately available for hotels and motels," said Matt Szabo, a Los Angeles administrative officer.

Los Angeles council members will receive bi-weekly updates on how the Bass administration has spent money to meet the needs of Inside Safe.

"I think it's up to the city council and the people of Los Angeles to continue to monitor and ensure that progress is being made," Sadwhani says.

Mayor Bass campaigned on a promise to house 17,000 people living on Los Angeles streets during her first year in office.

Each Friday during the first 100 days of the Bass administration KNX will present its latest Original Series— "Mayor Karen Bass - tracking The First 100 Days."  Reporter Craig Fiegener is keeping tabs on what Mayor Bass is saying she'll do, and how she'll do it.
