A vehicle being chased by police Wednesday in the South Los Angeles area struck and killed a bicyclist, and the motorist was taken into custody, according to authorities and reports from the scene.
The crash occurred at about 6:10 a.m. following a brief pursuit that led to the area of Hooper Avenue and 45th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, paramedics were sent to the neighborhood around that time, and a person died at that location. Information was not immediately available on the identity of the victim.
"LAPD Newton Area officers received a radio call of a theft from (a) motor vehicle suspect that was being followed by the victim of that theft," LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar told reporters at the scene.
Officers sent to the area tried to stop the suspect vehicle "and they initiated a pursuit eastbound on 52nd (Street) and then northbound on Hooper," Aguilar said.
"At Hooper and 46th Street, the suspect vehicle struck a person on a bicycle in that intersection," Aguilar said. "That vehicle continued northbound on Hooper until it struck multiple other vehicles, (and) ultimately flipped over at 45th and Hooper."
The suspect was arrested after trying to run away, according to reports from the scene.
Fox 11 reported that the motorist was taken into custody. It was unclear why police were chasing the vehicle.
