Volunteers are being sought across Los Angeles County ahead of Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 23, 2023.

The community cleanup will occur at 55 different sites, including Belmont Pier, Mother’s Beach in Long Beach, and  Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey. The Dockweiler Beach event will be held at 12505 Vista del Mar from 9 AM – 12 PM.

KNX News’ Brian Douglas, who regularly picks up trash at the beach, said it’s amazing how much trash is washed up and left at the beach.

“I've seen literally kitchen sinks,” he told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian. “I've seen a boat get washed up. I've found Bibles, philosophy books. Just about anything there.”

Kaitlin Soto with El Dorado Nature Center said you never know what else you’ll find while cleaning up on the beach.

“Some people found like chunks of mattresses and just random things like that,” she said.

She added that last year, an estimated 2,500 of debris and junk was collected in three hours.

Those interested in volunteering must sign up.
