West Hollywood officials have already begun reducing speed limits in their city, thanks to a new state law that allows cities to do so after conducting a proper analysis.
City council members have signed off on a plan to lower the speeds on some major streets, such as Sunset, Melrose, and Santa Monica, from 35 to 30 miles an hour, as well as 25 to 30 miles an hour on some narrow residential streets.
KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke with some residents about their thoughts on the speed limit reductions.
One woman said she doesn’t think drivers will slow down.
“I don't think anybody actually follows the speed limits in L.A.,” she said.
But another woman thought it was a great idea.
“ I find driving around, people are speeding a lot, and there's a lot of pedestrians out now,” she said. “Slower speeds, I believe, are safer.”
One man said the speed reduction makes sense.

“This is the most walkable city in L.A.,” he said. “I like it, and I don't think it's really going to affect anyone other than those hours of the morning when people are speeding through, and you step off the curb, and your dog can get hit.”
Other cities may make changes as well. L.A. officials are mulling over whether to try to reduce speeds on over 177 miles of city streets.
