Marilyn Alisa Cardenas, 22, of San Bernardino was arrested and booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning Sunday night on suspicion of murder and carrying a concealed weapon.

Cardenas, who is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, is suspected of fatally stabbing 53-year-old Elba Estrada, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Investigator Lance Stoyer said about 5:50 p.m. Sunday, patrol deputies were called to the 83-000 block of Avenue 48, near the Indian Palms Country Club & Resort, to investigate reports of an assault and found Estrada on the ground, mortally wounded from a knife wound.

First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stoyer said Central Homicide Unit detectives took over the investigation and quickly identified Cardenas as the alleged assailant. She was taken into custody without incident at the location.
