The threat of violence is so real for some these days that a quarter of American adults say they live in fear of being attacked in their own neighborhoods.
A new poll by NPR indicates that Americans of color are more likely than white Americans to say they feared being threatened or physically attacked.
According to the poll, a quarter of Black respondents, 26% of Latinos, 36% of Native Americans, 21% of Asian adults, and 19% of white adults say they have been afraid of violence in their own neighborhoods.
At the same time, crime is not viewed as a serious neighborhood problem by the majority. According to the poll, 35% of Black adults, 35% of Latinos, 40% of Native Americans, 22% of Asian adults, and 28% of white adults say crime is currently a serious problem in their own neighborhoods.
When it comes to interactions with police in their own neighborhoods, the poll shows that 35% of Black adults, 20% of Latinos, 28% of Native Americans, 11% of Asian adults, and 10% of white adults are not confident that police officers would treat them fairly.
Additionally, 15% of Black adults say they have been unfairly stopped or treated by the police in the past year because of their race/ethnicity, while 8% of Latinos, 9% of Native Americans, 4% of Asian adults, and 2% of white adults say the same, according to the poll.
Many have also felt unwelcome in their neighborhoods , the poll shows. One in four Black adults say they feel unwelcome in their neighborhood because of their race. The same goes for 19% of Latinos, 25% of Native Americans, 24% of Asian adults, and 8% of white adults.
"This poll provides powerful evidence that several racial/ethnic minority communities are often much worse off than non-Hispanic Whites in the current period when it comes to facing serious problems" such as safety and neighborhood conditions, the report states.
According to the most recent Uniform Crime Report from the FBI, the number of murders in the U.S. jumped by nearly 30% in 2020 -- the largest single-year increase ever recorded in the country, NPR reported. The FBI report also shows the overall violent crime rate -- which includes murder, assault, robbery and rape -- increased about 5% in 2020, while property crimes dropped 8% from the previous year.
