With Americans hitting the road this weekend to celebrate the Fourth of July — and extra days off — AAA is reporting that more than 393,000 motorists will need to be rescued due to car trouble.

Nationwide Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest weekends on the road, but not everyone is always prepared for a long journey, as thousands often have some sort of car trouble.

AAA shared in a press release that the three most common reasons motorists need assistance are flat tires, dead batteries, and lockouts.

To avoid this, AAA recommends getting your car inspected before hitting the road and bringing an extra set of keys just in case. Checking your tires, battery, and breaks is crucial to ensuring a safe road trip with no issues, according to AAA.

However, if you run into trouble, there are several best practices to remember to avoid getting hurt or causing an accident.

AAA says once you notice the issue, pull as far over on the shoulder as safely as possible, turn on your hazards, call for assistance, and remain in your vehicle.

If you must exit your vehicle, “watch the oncoming traffic for a good time to exit, and remain alert and close to your vehicle,” AAA warns.

Other precautions drivers can take include checking engine oil and other fluids, replacing broken windshield wipers, and having an emergency supply kit.

“The 4th of July is meant to be a day of celebration, and the last place anyone wants to spend it is stranded on the roadside with car trouble,” Adrienne Woodland, a spokeswoman for AAA, shared in a statement. “Before setting out for your holiday road trip, make sure your tires, battery, and brakes are all in proper working condition; and don’t forget that emergency kit.”

Most importantly, AAA says to practice safe driving while on the road, watch your speed, watch the road, drive sober, and rest up.

“Preparing your vehicle is one thing. It’s also important that drivers are personally ready to focus on the road,” AAA shared.
