NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Biden administration is expected to extend the travel mask mandate effecting commuters on airplanes, trains and buses amid rising COVID-19 infections and the highly transmissive delta variant.
Reuters reports the extension will last through Jan. 18 — as the current Transportation Security Administration mandate is set to expire on Sept. 13.
Masks are still required at indoor train stations and on board trains, buses, and paratransit vehicles in New York City, according to MTA guidance. Those who refuse to wear a mask could receive a $50 fine.
U.S. airlines were reportedly made aware of the planned extension by TSA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials on Tuesday. Aviation unions are expected to be told of the plan Wednesday, according to Reuters.
The looming announcement comes as the White House prepares to ask Americans to receive a COVID-19 booster shot, eight months after being fully vaccinated.
TSA and CDC officials did not immediately comment to Reuters. Airlines for America — a trade association which represents American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines — declined to comment.
