On Sunday, a white powdery substance was found near the ground floor entrance to the West Wing of the White House. After testing, a spokesman for the Secret Service confirmed that it tested positive for cocaine.
The spokesman shared the news with CNN, noting that a previous field test had yielded similar results, but it was sent for further evaluation to make sure, the Secret Service shared earlier this week.
A person familiar with the matter spoke with CNN about its location at the White House, noting that it was found in an area where staff-led tours occur.
The substance was located near where guests are asked to leave their cell phones before they enter the West Wing.
CNN also reported that the substance was found by Secret Service members in a small Ziploc bag while they were conducting routine rounds of the building.
As part of “precautionary closures,” there was a brief evacuation due to the discovery of the substance.
The Washington, D.C., Fire Department deployed its hazmat team to determine whether or not the substance was hazardous.
President Joe Biden was not home at the time, as he was confirmed to be spending his weekend at Camp David and did not return to the White House until Tuesday Morning.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said they are still investigating who was responsible for bringing the narcotic into the building.
