In a historic move, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is expected to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, according to multiple reports.

NBC News reported that the DEA will approve an opinion by the Department of Health and Human Services that marijuana should be classified as a Schedule 3 drug rather than Schedule 1.

Schedule 3 drugs, according to the DEA, are “defined as drugs with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.” Some examples given include ketamine and testosterone.

Schedule 1 drugs, on the other hand, are drugs “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Examples include heroin, peyote, and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).

The Associated Press noted that while easing restrictions could make marijuana research easier, critics argued that the drug would still be regulated by the DEA which means cannabis dispensaries in the U.S. will have to have register with the DEA.

The proposal still needs to be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget.

In October 2022, President Biden called for a review of federal marijuana law.
