A local infectious disease specialist expresses concerns about the potential for yet another COVID-19 surge this time post Super Bowl.
After experiencing what he described as a “horrendous two months” with the surge in cases that followed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, Dr. Leo Li, an infectious disease specialist out of Beverly Hospital in Montebello, tells KNX 1070 News "the last several weeks we have actually improved in our numbers, both locally and nationally so we have been very encouraged by that. But the big concern with Super Bowl Sunday is any potential super spreader event."
He also pointed to new and more contagious variants of the virus circulating such as the UK strain.
"The major concern is now that people were clustering, getting together for Super Bowl Sunday that these events put a lot of folks in close contact with each other and given the fact these variants are much more contagious, the concern is we may see a surge problem in the coming weeks," he says.
At the rate people are currently being vaccinated, he says it’s not nearly enough to help ease another surge.
