As the holiday season approaches, it's important to be aware of potential hazards lurking in our homes. Dr. Cyrus Rangan, co-director of the California Poison Control System, warns that common holiday practices can pose risks if not done correctly.

"Some people like to throw their wrapping paper into the fireplace," Dr. Rangan said. He tells KNX News' Craig Fiegener, "today's wrapping paper contains chemicals, waxes, and dyes, and these are certainly not designed to be burned, especially inside our homes."

Dr. Rangan said the fumes produced by the burning paper can cause respiratory irritation and, in some cases, require a visit to the emergency room.

Another potential danger is flocking a Christmas tree at home. "The flocking material can contain chemicals similar to those found in spray paint," Dr. Rangan cautioned. He said it's best to flock your tree outdoors to avoid inhaling these fumes, or better yet, have the professionals do it at the store.

Finally, Dr. Rangan reminds us to be vigilant about small toy parts, especially batteries, which can pose a choking hazard for young children.
