Vaccinated residents of California who downloaded their digital vaccine record have what appears to be a typical QR code, but officials say it’s much more secure.
Developers built the digital COVID vaccine records to protect your information. Only the authorized verification app can read the computer codes.

If you scan the QR code -- like perhaps you would to access the menu at a restaurant -- you get an error message. That, officials say, is a security feature of the “SMART Health Card.”
“This isn’t a bug — we did this to protect your information and privacy,” said California chief technology officer Rick Klau.
The “SMART Health Verifier” app, built by the nonprofit Commons Project, launched earlier this month and is publicly available for download.
The app only displays a green verification box and the person’s name, birthdate, and vaccination locations. It will not reveal contact information such as your address or phone number or any other health information, developers said.
As the highly contagious Delta variant spreads exponentially, more restaurants, stores, and events across California are requiring proof of vaccination. State officials recommend you screenshot the code to keep a copy in your photo album.
