There has always been controversy surrounding elections, whether it be hanging chads or a popular vote loser winning via the electoral college, but recently, belief in election integrity has plummeted.
According to a poll from Rasmussen Reports, a majority of American voters (56%) think that cheating is likely to affect the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. Even more worrying, 31% think it is “very likely.”
On the flip side, only 37% of voters think that it is unlikely cheating plays a role in the election, and 16% think it is “not at all likely.”
The findings are not new, as the pollsters found similar results in its September survey, but they highlight the growing concern amongst voters when it comes to the accuracy of elections.
Part of the skepticism comes from former President Donald Trump’s claims that fraud resulted in him losing the 2024.
Republicans have been found to be more likely to be skeptical of elections.
An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll from this summer found that just 22% of Republicans reported having high confidence that their votes in 2024 would be counted accurately, compared to 71% of Democrats.
No matter the skepticism, the election will still take place on the first Tuesday of November 2024, and as things stand, it appears former President Trump will face off against President Biden once again.
The Rasmussen Reports survey included responses from 1,029 voters and was conducted from Nov. 13-15. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
