You can never have too much of a good thing as far as Mariah Carey is concerned. She’s keeping the momentum behind her huge holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” going by releasing a new video.
The original home video-style clip shows Mariah frolicking in the snow, while the new one begins with the singer as part of a store’s holiday display window. What follows is lots of imagery of the season including Santa Claus and dancing toy soldiers.
“We wanted to make a modern classic and that’s kind of been the theme with this song from the beginning,” Carey said during a Q&A with fans that was livestreamed on YouTube. “It’s kind of the opposite of the original video because the original video – there was no syncing to camera; I’m just opening stuff and sleigh-riding and whatever. And this is a production, but I feel like it has the same spirit, if not more, because of how the song has affected me over the years.”
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” just went to number one on the Billboard chart 25 years after its release. It’s the first Christmas song to take the top position since The Chipmunks did it with “The Chipmunk Song” in 1959.
Mariah’s song is the gift that keeps on giving in many ways. The Economist reported that she’s earned $60 million in royalties as of 2017, and others have estimated another million comes in every holiday season.
