Meta to shutdown Workplace app to focus on AI and the metaverse

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced on Tuesday that it would be shutting down its business-focused Workplace app to instead focus on artificial intelligence and the metaverse.

The company shared that the decision comes as the AI and metaverse technologies it is developing “will fundamentally reshape the way we work.”

Workplace is a product that was marketed towards corporate customers and will now run out for existing customers on Aug. 31, 2025, giving them some time to adjust.

“Over the next two years, we will provide our Workplace customers the option to transition to Zoom's Workvivo product, Meta's only preferred migration partner,” Meta said in a statement.

For about a year after the app stops working, customers will be able to view their Workplace data, the company added.

Workplace has been around for almost a decade, first being introduced in 2016, and enables file sharing among colleagues and provides a hub for a company’s policies and documents.

Meta is among several companies investing in AI, as many call it the future of technology, while at the same time cutting thousands of jobs in other departments.

In April, Meta launched its new AI-powered chatbot.
