A dermatologist in southern California has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her husband, who is also a doctor, police said on Tuesday.
Dr. Jack Chen last Thursday told authorities he suspected he was being poisoned by his wife after falling ill over the course of one month. He set up a hidden camera to capture video evidence supporting his claim and presented it to police.
The videos were taken July 11, 18 and 25, and allegedly show 45-year-old Yue Yu in the couple's kitchen with a bottle of Drano drain cleaner, CBS Los Angeles reported. Chen's attorney claims one video shows Yu pouring the Drano into a glass of lemonade, which she later served to her husband.
Officers interviewed Yu and conducted a search of the home she shares with her husband in Irvine. Yu was subsequently arrested for allegedly poisoning Chen and booked at Orange County Jail. She was released after posting $30,000 bail on Friday, according to police records.
Chen sustained significant internal injuries as a result of the alleged poisoning, but is expected to survive, police said.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Yu is a dermatologist with an office at Mission Viejo. She is affiliated with Providence Mission Hospital, who told the paper in a statement that they were aware of the arrest and were cooperating with police. "We want to reassure our community that there has been no impact on our patients," the hospital said. According to the outlet, her biography was removed from the hospital's site as of Sunday.
No other information, including a possible motive, has been released.
The case remains under investigation.
