Much of the U.S. will be dealing with freezing temperatures this holiday week, but at least one Southern California town should be toasty.
“Who is looking forward to being the warmest place in the US Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (denoted by the red star in the loop below)?” said tweet this week from the National Weather Service San Diego. “We’re sending our warmest wishes to those north and east of us! If we could share, we would.”
According predictions issued Dec. 20, San Diego is expected to have temperatures in the 70s throughout Christmas weekend. A high temperature of 75 degrees is expected Christmas Eve (Saturday) and a high of 76 degrees is expected Christmas Day (Sunday).
Some parts of the nearby region – such as San Bernardino, Calif. – are expected to have high temperatures close to 80 degrees.
“Highs on Wed will be 5 to 8 degrees above normal away from the immediate coast, with further warming expected into the weekend,” said another tweet from the National Weather Service.
Although the San Diego area will have warmer conditions than other parts of the nation, not all is calm on the weather front. High tides are expected to arrive in the area ahead of Christmas Eve.
“King Tides near 7 feet Friday and Saturday mornings will produce minor flooding at some beach parking lots and boardwalks,” between 7 and 9 a.m.,” said a tweet. According to the National Weather Service, King Tide is “is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides.”
Those who avoid the tides in the morning should have an interesting opportunity later in the day.
“The water will recede each afternoon to low tides of -1.8 feet, which will be great for tidal pool exploration!” said the National Weather Service.
