University of Michigan agrees to $490M settlement with sexual assault victims

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WWJ/AP) — The University of Michigan has agreed to a $490 million settlement associated with the sexual assault claims against Dr. Robert Anderson.

Attorney Parker Stinar said approximately 1,050 people will share in the settlement that will end the decades-long sexual assault scandal, involving the university sports doctor who died in 2008.

According to the AP, the university had been in mediation to resolve multiple lawsuits by mostly men who said Anderson sexually abused them during routine medical examinations.

Anderson was director of the university's Health Service and a physician for multiple athletic teams, including football.

East Lansing attorney Jamie White said that this is a good day for the state of Michigan, a good day for the University of Michigan and "most importantly" a good day for the survivors.

A formal announcement is expected later in the day on Wednesday.
