BART Board's Li speaks her mind: 'F-k Elon Musk'

Janice Li isn’t mincing words when it comes to polarizing CEO Elon Musk.

"First of all, f-k Elon Musk. I don’t need him in my life," the BART Board Director said during a virtual "Bus, Trains, People" panel last weekend at TransitCon.

Li made the remark about the SpaceX and Tesla leader as part of a longer answer in responding to a question from the moderator: "What are we not talking about that we should be talking about?"

"Elected officials just don’t understand transit," she started. "They just want to cut the ribbon. They want the hyperloop. They want the photo with Elon Musk."

Li represents BART’s 8th District, which includes parts of San Francisco.

"We are talking about hypothetical Black and Brown people. We are talking about hypothetical essential workers. We are not getting to know the people that are really impacted by these services." Li went on to explain she needs to "build true compassion with actual human beings" and bring that experience to the BART Board of Directors in order to better lead transit development.

"That’s critical so that when we say transit…we really understand transit as part of a larger continuum of people’s lives and how we navigate space and our cities and wherever we live," she added.

The panel was created to address building "useful, equitable transit."

As for Musk, he announced in December he's moved to Texas.
