San Francisco’s mayor is responding to criticism over her controversial attendance at a birthday dinner at a high-end Napa restaurant last month.
"This criticism is fair," Mayor London Breed wrote on Twitter early Thursday. "It doesn't matter whether something is technically allowed or not - I need to hold myself to a higher standard and I will do better."
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Breed was one of eight guests at a dinner party held at the exclusive French Laundry in Yountville on November 7, taking place just one night after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s slip up of the same kind.
A spokesman for Breed called the event a "small family birthday dinner."
Just three days after the reported event, San Francisco banned indoor dining.
The episode marks just the latest in a number of high-profile incidents, including San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, who attended a large Thanksgiving gathering against the state’s coronavirus protocol last week.
The governor and Liccardo have since apologized.
Breed’s apology comes as San Francisco, the Bay Area and the state are experiencing a surge in new coronavirus cases. The state’s Department of Public Health reported a single-day record 20,000 cases Wednesday.
