The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is racing ahead of other variants, according to federal health officials, making it now the dominant version of the virus in the United States, according to the Associated Press Monday.

Alarms for the Omicron variant went off about one month ago, following warnings from scientists in Africa. The World Health Organization designated it a “variant of concern" shortly after.

As of Monday, more than 60 Omicron variant cases have been recorded by health officials in L.A. County.
