There's only one statewide proposition on the California ballot this Super TuesdayProp. 1, a $6 billion plan to build mental health treatment beds and housing to help deal with the homeless crisis.

With CA Governor Newsom putting all his political muscle behind the measure, some are saying it's vital to his career that Prop. 1 pass.

Cal Matters political analyst Dan Walters tells KNX News that if the proposition were to fail, it would be quite a political embarrassment for Newsom.

"I mean, they've spent, I don't know, $12 or $13 million to pass this thing. The opposition, which basically just exists on paper, has no campaign at all," said Walters.

According to Walters, "This is supposed to be his signal accomplishment as his governorship begins to wind down and it's something he's been talking about for a long time. He devoted his entire State of the State address to this subject a couple of years ago. So, yeah, it would be tremendously embarrassing."

Walters takes it a step further, saying a failure to pass Prop. 1 would be an embarrassment to Newsom not only as governor but also as a potential future candidate for higher office - say, the president of the United States.

If passed, Prop. 1 is expected to cost taxpayers billions, but critics say it won't solve homelessness even with such a hefty price tag.

Some opposing the proposition say the program would remove funding from existing homeless initiatives and simply, 'rob Peter to pay Paul.'
