Oakland spa employee shoots at co-workers before killing herself: Report

Oakland police are investigating a shooting at a spa near Lake Merritt where an employee allegedly fired at her co-workers, critically wounding one, before fatally shooting herself.

The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. at Kume Spa at the 600 block of Grand Ave, according to Oakland Police Public Information Officer Kim Armstead. Authorities received a call about a shooting in progress.

After established a perimeter upon arrival at the scene, police found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and began rendering aid.

Both shooting victims were transported a local hospital, where one of the individuals died from their injuries. The other was listed in critical condition.

The East Bay Times reported the person who died, a 49-year-old woman from Berkeley who worked at the spa over the last year, was the shooter. According to the paper, the man hospitalized, another spa employee, was the first person she shot at. Other employees at the spa were fired at but not hit, before the woman eventually shot herself.

Armstead said police do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence nor does it present a current threat to the community.
