The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s gorillas have recovered from the coronavirus, officials announced Saturday.

Zoo officials said that despite adhering to all recommended precautions, several members of the gorilla troop tested positive for the virus on January 11.

Because of that, visitor access to the primates was limited as the zoo cared for the infected gorillas.

Some of the sick troop members experienced symptoms such as coughing, congestion and lethargy.

“We’re so grateful for the outpouring concern and support we’ve received while the troop safely recovered,” said Lisa Peterson, executive director of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “We’re thrilled to share the joy that this beloved troop brings to our community and to our guests.”

Guests can once again see the fully recovered, eight-member troop.

Zoo officials said they’ve already begun to share the information that was learned from this experience, and hope it helps the scientific community to better understand the virus and its effects on apes.
