A majority of Californians support requiring COVID-19 vaccination before going into indoor spaces like bars or gyms or going into large outdoor gatherings, according to a new poll.

Public Policy Institute of California surveyed 1,706 adults over the phone. Of those who participated, 61 percent were in support of the mandate.

Survey director Mark Baldassare told KNX 1070 that in Los Angeles County there is a broad base of support for requiring proof of vaccination.

"In the Los Angeles area, about two-thirds, by a two-to-one margin, people said they would be requiring proof of vaccination to attend large indoor and outdoor events," he said.

The Bay Area showed the strongest support with 72 percent of residents approving of mandates. San Diego and Orange County, however, had substantially less support with only 58 percent of residents favoring a mandate.

Last month, California announced a mandate requiring proof of the COVID-19 vaccine for indoor events. That is set to go into effect on Sept. 20.

Meanwhile, some Democratic lawmakers floated a bill that would have required proof of vaccination to enter most indoor businesses, but the measure was shelved until at least next year.
