LOS ANGELES (KNX) — When you think of America's greatest barbecue cities, does San Jose come to mind? Probably not. But a recent survey suggests it should.

Analysis from Clever Real Estate, released on Friday, ranked San Jose as the third best city for barbecue in the U.S. The review ranked the barbecue experience among the 50 largest metro areas in the U.S. across various metrics with different weighted values.

San Antonio and Austin unsurprisingly ranked first and second, respectively. But surprisingly, San Jose beat out Kansas City, St. Louis, Houston, and Memphis, where the survey claimed residents spend the "most time searching the web" for barbecue hot spots.

San Jose's high score was buoyed by the affordability of its food. According to Clever's data, buying four pounds of barbecue meat in San Jose every month would cost the average resident 0.21% of their income, making it the cheapest barbecue among the 50 areas measured.

In addition, the city boasts a high number of barbeque establishments, with 5.6 restaurants per 100,000 people. There is a barbeque restaurant every 2.8 miles in San Jose, up from the national average of 5.4 miles.

Los Angeles ranked #27. Riverside ranked #31, just behind San Francisco at #30. Sacramento placed #23. The website reported Las Vegas has the most barbecue restaurants per capita, with 6 per 100,000 people — nearly triple the national average. Miami has the fewest at 0.6 per 100,00 residents.

Las Vegas has 10x as many BBQ spots per capita as Miami, which has the fewest on our list at just 0.6 BBQ restaurants per 100,000 people.

Other metrics used to compare the different cities include average Yelp rating of barbecue restaurants, Google trends score for barbecue terms, number of Kansas City Barbeque Society Master Series competitions hosted, and major barbecue events.
