An investigation is underway after a woman’s body was found about 200 feet from the Caltrans work site where Highway 1 south of Big Sur washed out.

The woman, identified by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office as 64-year-old Nancy Algert of Templeton, was found Wednesday near the same spot along the roadway at Rat Creek that crews are working to rebuild after it completely washed away in a January winter storm.

According to a Facebook post, officials believe Algert "parked her vehicle near the construction site" and got out of her car. "She apparently went around the job site fencing and had been walking around the area," the news release said.

Cmdr. Derrel Simpson told the San Luis Obispo Tribune investigators believe she fell, landing about 200 feet outside the work site, according to Caltrans.

The death doesn’t appear suspicious.

While work stopped immediately, Caltrans said crews were back on Thursday.

The road is expected to be open again by early summer.
