DALLAS (KRLD) - It's the third strike for David Irving.

The National Football League has suspended the Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman indefinitely for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.  It is the third suspension for Irving.

Irving, 25, is set to become an unrestricted free agent later this month.  In 2017, he was suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancers.  And last year, Irving got another four-game punishment for a substance-abuse violation.

Word of Irving's suspension came three days after teammate Randy Gregory received his fourth substance-abuse suspension.

Earlier this week, Irving defended his on-field performance in an Instagram post:

"I'm in the NFL because I'm great at what I do.  I'm not in the NFL because I'm an Eagle Scout, or the perfect model citizen.  Once I step on the field and stop performing, THEN we have a problem."

The Cowboys signed Irving off the Kansas City practice squad in September 2015.  He has recorded 12.5 sacks in his career.
