DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - There’s a new telephone scam alert out from the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's office is warning about a caller who tried to trick someone into giving them money, by pretending to be a sheriff's deputy.

The caller used the real name of a deputy, as well as their real phone number.

The scammer, posing as the deputy, told their would-be victim that there was a case against them.

The fake deputy told the person that in exchange for not investigating this case, the person needed to buy $1,600 worth of gift cards. The person didn't fall for it, and let investigators know right away.

Dallas County sheriffs or any other law enforcement would never ask for money, and especially not in exchange for dropping a case.

Investigators say if this happens to you, and especially if a scammer is impersonating a law enforcement officer, call it in right away.
