DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas police have set up a self-defense class for gay, lesbian and transgender people. Police say they had heard from several people after a series of assaults on LGBTQ people earlier this year.

Police are not leading the class. They have set up the program with Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense.

"We've partnered with the Dallas Police Department to provide an inclusive self-defense training workshop," says owner Nick Chamberlain.

Chamberlain says the class will include both physical and mental self-defense techniques.

"The LGBTQ community is often left out of different events," he says. "The police department will be there to answer questions on local incidents of violence."

Police say more than 100 people had already RSVP'ed by Friday morning, but advance registration is not required.

The class runs from 12-3 p.m. Saturday at Juanita Craft Recreation Center at 4500 Spring Avenue, Dallas, TX 75210.
