FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Despite the valiant efforts of two MedStar paramedics, one of the people they pulled out of a burning car has died -- and so has her unborn daughter.
The paramedics were en route to a posting location Wednesday night when they encountered a fiery crash.
"As the crew was traveling northbound on Interstate 35W on the ramp to eastbound 20, they witnessed a pretty significant car crash," says MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky; "and right after the car crash happened, one of the vehicles became engulfed in flames."
Miguel Brito and Ryan Bader immediately sprung into action.
"The crew at that point grabbed the fire extinguisher from the ambulance (and) was able to push the flames back far enough to the point that they were able to manually extricate the two unconscious victims inside the burning car," says Zavadsky.
One of those two, Jade Gilliam, 19, died at JPS hospital late Thursday night.
Gilliam was pregnant; and unfortunately, her unborn baby also died.
No word on the condition of the other person Brito and Bader pulled out of the fiery wreckage.
Zavadsky says Brito and Bader were in the right place at the right time and acted heroically.
"If these crew members were not there and did not take the actions that they did, it is likely that the two victims could have burned alive in the vehicle because the car was fully engulfed in flames," Zavadsky says.
