AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - A bill became law this weekend, and it made a lot of people very happy.

Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill to ban red light cameras in Texas Saturday. House Bill 1631 passed both chambers of the Texas Legislature in May prior to being signed by Abbott on Saturday.

Edgewood State Senator Bob Hall, who sponsored the bill, said that red light cameras were a violation of due process.

An investigation by KXAN-TV in Austin found that most cameras were not in compliance with state law. Cities and counties are required to get out of their contracts with red light vendors before phasing them out completely.

There is an amendment allowing cities to keep the cameras in place until contracts expire with private companies.
