GRAND PRAIRIE (1080 KRLD) - The Grand Prairie school district is announcing Superintendent Dr. Susan Simpson Hull was critically injured in a motorcycle accident and has died.
According to the district, it happened while on vacation in Arizona. Her family was with her when she died.
Her family says she suffered a stroke while riding. No other cars or motorcycles were involved.
The district says Hull died Monday afternoon, surrounded by family.
"This is a significant loss for the entire Grand Prairie ISD community as well as the education community at large. Over the past 12 years, Dr. Hull has made a significant impact on GPISD and helped establish our reputation around the globe. She also made a lasting difference in school children around Texas through her advocacy and creativity. She will be sorely missed," school board President Burke Hall wrote in a statement.
Grand Prairie ISD says Hull had 39 years of experience as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in five school districts. The district says Hull led Grand Prairie to become a leader in school choice.
"She has taken student achievement to the highest levels, providing students with life-changing opportunities," the district says.
"Susan spent her career in public education as a warrior for students across Texas," Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath wrote in a statement Monday night. "Over the course of four decades of public service in education, her dedication to improving outcomes and expanding opportunities for the neediest of students has been truly remarkable."
The Texas Association of School Boards and Texas Association of School Administrators selected Hull as Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2005.
Details on a memorial are pending.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our Grand Prairie ISD family as we all mourn the loss of Superintendent Dr. Susan Hull. We thank you for your leadership in education and partnership with GPPD. pic.twitter.com/rjXsIW1a58
